The basketball world was hit by tragedy on May 28 with news that New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was shot dead, his agent has confirmed. This is just awful, and our heartfelt wishes go out to his family and teammates.
This is just really bad news. Bryce Dejean-Jones, 23, a talented guard for the New Orleans Pelicans has died after he was shot in the abdomen, his agent has confirmed on May 28. Reports on how the incident happened are pretty sketchy, but according to a police report he broke into an apartment in Texas and was shot by a man inside, claim Dallas cops.
The police report says that Bryce “kicked open the front door” when a man inside woke up and shot him as he tried to enter an apartment at 3:20am. Why Bryce was doing this, we just don’t know, but there has to be some reason why this terrible incident happened, right?
When the door was kicked open, the man inside, who remains unnamed, was said to have been startled and immediately grabbed his handgun. He called out to see who was there, but go no reply. Police say that Bryce then kicked the door open in the bedroom and the man fired.
Bryce managed to stumble out of the apartment, but was found “collapsed in the breezeway.” He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital where he passed away. An autopsy wasn’t performed, but his agent did say he died after the one fatal wound to his abdomen.
Bryce was signed by the Pelicans in 2015 as a free-agent rookie in 2015, and was given a three-year contract before he broke his wrist and required surgery. He was set for big things, but now we’ll never know what he could’ve achieved.
It’s all very suspicious, and we don’t know his motives yet for trying to break in to the apartment, but we have to hope there was something valid and think positively about it.
