‘Roots’ is coming back to your TV screen once again on Monday, May 30. The iconic miniseries will once again follow Kunta Kinte’s story, based on Alex Haley’s novel. Before watching, here’s 5 things to know about the classic character!

1. The character is being played by Malachi Kirby in the remake.
Malachi Kirby plays the young Kunta Kinte in History Channel’s Roots miniseries. He’s a British actor best known for his roles on EastEnders and Doctor Who.
2. Kunta Kinte was created by Alex Haley.
Kunta Kinte is a character in Alex Haley’s novel, Roots: The Saga of an American Family. The book was published in 1976. Alex won a Pulitzer Prize for the book .
3. LeVar Burton played the role in the original Roots.
LeVar was cast as Kunta Kinte in the 1977 TV miniseries. He received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor for a Single Appearance in a Drama or Comedy Series. The miniseries was nominated for 37 Primetime Emmys and won 9.
LeVar fully supports a remake of the iconic miniseries. He believes the story is more important than ever.

4. Alex claimed that Kunta was based on one of her ancestors.
The inspiration for the novel came after Alex went searching for his ancestral roots. He has called Roots “faction,” which means part fact and part fiction.
5. There have been two Roots sequels.
Roots: The Next Generations aired in 1979. A second sequel, Roots: The Gift, aired as a Christmas movie in 1988.
