Questlove started off the tribute sharing touching memories of Prince. “No matter your race… all of us live in the land of music,” he noted before bringing the Material Girl to the stage. Madonna began the performance alone singing Sinead O’Connor‘s hit “Nothing Compares To You”, which was written by the purple one. Then Stevie joined Madonna and the pair closed with Prince’s biggest hit song, “Purple Rain.”
The staging was perfect, Madonna’s voice was classic, and everything about the performance was done with a touch of class. Madonna and Stevie both dressed in purple and looked every bit like the rock stars they are. Madge seems like she never ages a day. After her performance Madonna thanked Prince for everything, “Most of all thank you Prince Rogers Nelson for all that you have given us,” as she fought back the tears. Madonna’s Prince tribute at the Billboard Music Awards was the latest in a long string of musicians to honor the artist since his unexpected passing in April, 2016.
American rock god, Bruce Springsteen, 66, was another icon to pay his respects to the fallen star. Bruce sang Purple Rain to his fans at a concert in Brooklyn, New York a week after Prince passed. But the Billboard Music Awards belonged to Madonna and Stevie. Their tribute to Prince was fitting, respectful, touching, heart-felt and wonderful in every way. Bravo, well done!
