There was no more perfect way to honor Celine Dion, 48, after her incredibly challenging 2016 than for the BBMAs to bestow the legendary songstress their Icon Award, and a very special member of her family was on hand for the event. She broke down in tears when her 15-year-old son Rene Charles Angelil came onstage to hand the prestigious trophy to his beloved mother.
Seal surprised her by having Rene Charles come onstage to hand Celine her Icon trophy after a powerhouse performance of “The Show Must Go On.” She was clearly shocked and brought to tears and said, “I want to be so strong for my family and my kids and I don’t want to cry in front of you,” to her eldest child before asking, “Would you like to stand next to me?” while he smilingly agreed.
“I want to thanks the fans for traveling through music for me in good and bad times. Music has been my passion before I can almost remember,” she began her speech. She also thanked, “my family, my mom who wrote my first song. my children, Rene, Nelson, and Edy, and most importantly, the one person who I know will continue to watch over me from up above,” speaking of her late husband and manager Rene Angelil, who passed away from cancer in Jan. at 73-years-old. The 1991 original was recorded when lead singer Freddie Mercury was dying from complications with HIV/AIDS, similar to how Rene passed way from a long and painful battle with cancer.
