Charlize Theron & Sean Penn: Exes Look Super Awkward At Cannes — Pics

They couldn't avoid each other forever! Nearly a year after their split, Charlize Theron and Sean Penn came together at the Cannes Film Festival...but it didn't look like a friendly reunion. Check out the awkward pic of them hugging on the red carpet here! Charlize Theron, 40, and Sean Penn, 55, probably didn't expect this when they decided to work on the movie The Last Face together! They were engaged when the film was shot, but now they're broken up...so things were obviously uncomfortable when they had to promote the flick at the Cannes Festival on May 20. Yikes!

The actress stars in The Last Face, which was directed by her ex, and the pair were joined by others involved in the movie for its big debut at Cannes. The cast/crew posed for photos on the red carpet, with Charlize and Sean carefully placed on opposite ends of the group so they wouldn’t have to interact too much. But, at one point, they came face-to-face for a hug — and it could NOT be more uncomfortable to look at!

It was a big day for both of them, but it’s impossible to look past the looks of discomfort on their faces as they professionally try to get through the whole ordeal. After being friends for years, these two took their relationship to the next level in Dec. 2013, then reportedly got engaged a year later. However, in June 2015, it was revealed that they had split.

“There is a need to sensationalize things,” Charlize said, of the split. “When you leave a relationship there has to be some f–king crazy story or some crazy drama. And the f—ing ghosting thing, like literally, I still don’t even know what that is. It’s just its own beast. We were in a relationship and then it didn’t work anymore. And we both decided to separate. That’s it.”

Unfortunately, not only was there this awkward run-in, but The Last Face didn’t fare well with critics at the movie festival, either. The film was slammed as not relatable, and got pretty terrible reviews overall. Yikes!
