It’s here!!! The NBA will be welcoming their rookie class with June 23 draft, but first the league is holding its lottery to determine which teams will get to select first, with many teams not even getting a chance at all! Keep reading to find out where and when to watch the big draw!
ESPN will air the draft lottery on its network starting live at 8pm EST, and you can also watch it on their livestream. The lottery is almost like a game show, with ping-pong balls featuring the team named being randomly selected with each ball drop, determining the draft selection order. It makes for some crazy viewing, and this year 14 teams will have their chances in the random drawing. And since the system is so crazy, a team that made the playoffs could end up getting to pick ahead of a team that had an awful record.
in 2015, Minnesota Timberwolves landed the first selection and immediately grabbed Karl-Anthony Towns from Kentucky for the No. 1 pick. He went on to become the 2015-2016 NBA Rookie of the Year, winning the honor in a unanimous vote.
This time around the lowly Philadelphia 76’ers and L.A. Lakers are the teams with the best chances of getting a first round pick, which they so desperately need. But the Boston Celtics – who made the playoffs – are number three in the lottery odds thanks to a trade with the Brooklyn Nets so anything could happen!
As for the players themselves, the 162 early-entry candidates were just evaluated at the Chicago combine, with LSU’s Ben Simmons and Duke’s Brandon Ingram looking to be the most sought after players once the draft goes down. There are 116 players straight out of college, 45 international players and one post-graduation player currently hoping to land a spot in the NBA. The NCAA underclasssmen include 60 juniors, 29 sophomores and 27 freshmen who hope to make the pre-senior jump in to pro-ball.
