The Internet has blown up over 100 meters freestyle champion swimmer Elizabeth Marks, 25, who was presented with a gold medal at the Invictus Games by Prince Harry, 31, and got a kiss on the cheek and hug for good measure. But who exactly is the gorgeous swimmer that caught the Royal’s eye? Click down for the fun facts!
1. Before Prince Harry gets any ideas…
Elizabeth is actually spoken for! The Arizona native is married to Colton Wasil, a bodybuilder and personal trainer, who couldn’t be more proud of his wife. “I’m kind of amazed by all the things she does and how strong she is, because I couldn’t go through surgeries without crying every day,” he told the Daily Courier back in 2011.
2. She’s been through a terrible ordeal to get this far.
As a former soldier serving in Iraq in 2010, Elizabeth suffered severe hip injuries which left her with no sensation in her left leg. However, she took up swimming as a form of rehabilitation and was spotted by an Army swimming coach who convinced her to try out for the Warrior Games.
3. Elizabeth missed the 2014 Invictus Games when she fell gravely ill.
The former Sgt. was robbed of her opportunity to compete in 2014 when she became ill, her lungs filled with fluid and she had to put into an induced coma. Doctors at the Papworth Hospital in the UK saved her life, which is why she gave her gold medal back to Harry and asked him to give it to the staff at the medical practice.
4. Her father was a war vet.
Elizabeth’s hero is her dad, James Marks, who signed up to the army in 1969 when soldiers were being recruited for the Vietnam war. He enlisted when he was just 17-years-old, and history repeated itself when his daughter followed in his footsteps aged just 17 too.
5. She’s an amazing swimmer.
Her ability in the pool can’t be underestimated, she’s ranked number one in the world in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:30.44, as per the International Paralympic Committee.
