Jake poured Vanessa’s father a drink, but it wasn’t just a drink. Vanessa’s father started to clutch his chest, and Jake watched him die! And it was all for Rowan. What hasn’t Jake done for Rowan?
Cyrus went to David to ask him to be Vargas’ VP. David immediately wanted to know what the catch was. He knew Cyrus had something up his sleeve. Cyrus swore he was done with the darkness. He truly believed in Vargas. Later, Liz wanted to get on board with David, but he still hadn’t forgiven her for ruining his chance with Susan.
Olivia and the Gladiators were trying to find Mellie a VP. No one was coming up clean. Except one — Gov. Bill Wagner. His only sin was that he had dealt cocaine in college to pay off his loans. That was it.
Edison rushed to Olivia to tell him what Jake said to him. Olivia didn’t really seem that concerned. Edison freaked out over Olivia’s flippant response. Huck begged her to reconsider. But she knew that if she helped, Rowan would kill Jake. Then Huck revealed that Vanessa’s father had died. Vanessa had just inherited half a billion dollars. Rowan was planning something big.
Rowan was offering big money to Vargas’ campaign. Cyrus did not want to get involved with the devil — again. All Rowan wanted was for Jake to be VP. If not, he would spill Cyrus’ secret that he staged Vargas’ big hero moment in Pennsylvania. Even though he did NOT want to, Cyrus pushed Jake as VP on Vargas.
On Her Own
Fitz was already thinking about his future outside of the White House. The king of the Olitz fandom even mentioned he might end up in Vermont. But that was before he found Liv’s medical records on Abby’s desks, which meant he found out about her abortion. “This is a lie,” he said.
Cyrus ran over to Olivia to complain about Rowan’s hold on him. Olivia wanted to know what Rowan had on Cyrus, and Cy eventually spilled. Needless to say, Olivia was shocked. But there wasn’t much she could do.
Mellie had a read at Fitz’s convention speech, and she was not happy with what he was going to say. She stomped up to the convention stage to complain to him about it. She called his speech an “abomination.” Fitz believed he was helping Mellie by talking about himself. He made a decent point when he explained his motive. “They still love me,” Fitz said. “Even after everything.” Yeah, then he got cocky.
He even said that he would have beaten her if he was able to run again. He poked an angry bear. “I got here on my own,” Mellie spat at him. “I got here because I managed to escape you.” YIKES. Then she stuck the dagger in. “Unlike you, I want this,” she continued. “Unlike you, I earned this.” She reminded him that this stage was HERS.
One Olitz Look Changed Everything
Jake and Olivia had a secret meeting. She explained why she let him marry Vanessa and left him at the church. “It was the only way to keep my father from killing you,” she said. “I will save you. Somehow.” Jake just needed to trust Olivia. And he did. Completely. Huck said it was time to act “like a gangster.” Olivia had to become Command.
Olivia had an idea for Mellie’s running mate. She went to see Fitz and revealed she wanted JAKE to be Mellie’s VP. Fitz agreed that Jake was a good choice. But Fitz wanted to talk to Olivia. Just a moment. “I miss you,” he said. “Not like that.” And with that, my heart broke.
After listening to Mellie’s rant, Fitz apologized to Olivia for not listening enough. He looked at Olivia, and that’s when she knew. She knew that he knew about her abortion. But he didn’t say anything. Fitz let her go. He didn’t question her. He didn’t ask why. He made the ultimate sacrifice.
Olivia headed to Rowan to save Jake. She told Jake to follow her. When Jake got up, Rowan put a gun to his head. She told Rowan to go ahead. She called Rowan’s bluff. Rowan couldn’t pull the trigger. Jake and Olivia actually walked out of the house ALIVE. Jake was now Mellie’s VP. But Cyrus had another running mate up his sleeve, and it wasn’t David.
‘That’s My Girl’
Meanwhile, Tom was willing to kill Michael for Cyrus so he could get Ella back. Cyrus admitted that his romance with Tom was the “truest, most honest relationship I’ve ever had.” Tom looked really in love. But Cyrus is and always will be a snake. Instead of choosing David as his Vargas’ VP, Cyrus chose HIMSELF.
He broke up with Tom and said he was getting back together with Michael. Tom looked STUNNED. Dude, do you know how deadly Tom is? Cyrus better watch it.
Everything was going according to plan. Jake and Olivia had gotten away from Rowan. Then Jake did changed his tune. He wanted to take his name off the ticket. He did not want to be VP. He just wanted to live a normal life with Olivia now. But that was not what she wanted.
Remember what Olivia told Edison in season 2? That she didn’t “want normal, and easy, and simple…” She knew a normal life with Jake was an unimpressive life. Jake realized Olivia didn’t save him because she loved him, she just wanted to save her ticket. But he still walked out on stage with Mellie anyway. You don’t mess with the Popes.
Olivia was pretty pissed to find out Cyrus was running as Vargas’ VP. But there was really nothing she could do about it. They both had terrible things on each other. While all of this was going down, Rowan was just enjoying the ride. Olivia proved to be her father’s daughter. “That’s my girl,” Rowan said in the final moments of the finale.
