Rory Feek had to deal with the pain of celebrating his first Mother’s Day without his late wife, Joey Feek. In true Rory fashion, he wrote about the sad day beautifully on his blog, and detailed how they remembered the mama they loved so much!
Joey Feek tragically passed away at the age of 40 on March 4, making this the first Mother’s Day that Rory Feek, 51, and their three daughters, were forced to celebrate without her. It was obviously an incredibly hard day for Rory, Heidi, Hopie and Indiana, but Rory wrote about what made it special: the beautiful mother they were celebrating. Before marrying Joey, Rory was a single dad to his two eldest daughters, Heidi and Hopie, now 27 and 29. His daughters celebrated him every Mother’s Day, he wrote on his blog. He was young, and had difficulties raising the two girls by himself. But later in life, he met Joey and all his fears about having another child melted away. Along came Indiana!
Rory wrote extensively about his relationship with Joey, who died of cervical cancer, and how strong and wonderful she became as a mother. Not just to little Indiana, but to her stepdaughters, too! Now that Joey has passed, he doesn’t want his daughters to start celebrating him on Mother’s Day every year; this still has to be about Joey and her memory! He made sure to thank Joey for all she did, too.
“Though my beautiful wife sleeps in a bed of clover behind our farmhouse, we still celebrate her on this special day and lift her up and give her flowers,” Rory wrote. “This is not my day. It is hers. Joey loved being a mother more than anything else in the world. And she is still Indy’s mama. And Heidi’s and Hopie’s. And she is part of them.”
“Sometimes when I’m driving somewhere and Indiana falls asleep in her carseat, I pull over to the side of the road and I just sit there and stare at her,” Rory wrote. “At her long eyelashes and her little fingers and tennis shoes. And I still see Joey beside her. With us. Everywhere we go. And all the pain and fear that I feel melts away… and it’s replaced by the feeling of how lucky I am…that we are. Indy’s so beautiful. When I look into her little eyes… all I see is love. Thank you for the beautiful gift my love. Happy Mothers Day Joey.”
