1. Where did the horse get his name from?
Nyquist is actually named after the Detroit Red Wings hockey star Gustav Nyquist. The owner of the horse, Paul Reddam is a HUGE Red Wings fan. Paul has named a lot of his horses after players of his favorite team, but none have had such success.
2. How many races has Nyquist won?
Well, he has a completely flawless record. He has raced 8 times and finished number one in each and every one, including the recent Florida Derby and now the Kentucky Derby. Onwards and upwards to Preakness!
3. How is it doing in the winnings stakes?
Nyquist came into the Kentucky Derby with the biggest winnings of any horse that’s ever entered, so before it stepped onto Churchill Downs he had made his owner an astonishing $3,322,600. With the earnings that he got from the Kentucky Derby, believed to be around $2 million, we can say he’s surely feeling good about life right now!
4. Nyquist wasn’t an expensive purchase
Horses usually trade for around a $1 million each, if they have the right pedigree. Nyquist cost Paul a mere $400,000, which is chump change in the horse racing world and an absolute bargain!
5. Mario Gutierrez is the jockey for Nyquist
They’ve ridden together in all 8 races, and seem to be the dream team. Mario famously rode I’ll Have Another when he won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness in 2012, so he’s been here before.
