The Kentucky Derby provides two of the most exciting minutes in sports all year, and there’s some stiff competition between the 22 horses running in 2016! Ahead of the big race, get to know the super-fast animals right here — it’s definitely going to be a night to remember.

20 horses will run the race on May 7, and they’re all so beautiful and striking to look at! The three-year-old thoroughbreds will run as fast as they can for a mile and a quarter at Churchill Downs, but only one will be named the winner of the first of three major horse races.
Last year, American Pharaoh was the Derby winner, and he went on to make history by taking the title at both the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, as well, earning the highly-coveted Triple Crown. The Derby has taken place every year since 1875, and it only gets bigger every year, so this year’s contestants sure do have a lot to live up to!
This year’s front runner is Nyquist, a stunning, brown horse, who is said to have 3-1 odds at winning the event. However, as we’ve seen plenty of times, anything can happen!
The Kentucky Derby is broadcast on NBC beginning at 4pm EST — of course, the actual race is only is only a couple of minutes long so there’s tons of pre-show coverage before the actual fun begins. Get prepped for the event by checking out all the horses racing in the gallery above!
