Sevilla did the hard bit by avoiding defeat in the hostile environment of the Ukraine, although their first leg match-up was played on neutral territory rather than Shakhtar’s intimidating home. But that doesn’t detract from the fact that Sevilla are in pole position to progress to the final.
Should they do it, the pre-tournament favorites will be making their third appearance in as many years in a Europa League final. They’re aiming to complete a historic treble of wins in as many years, but there’s still one more game to go so they can’t start counting their chickens yet.
Kevin Gameiro, who scored a late penalty in the first leg to earn Sevilla the draw, will be the danger man again that Shakhtar’s defenders will have to mark well. But Sevilla will have to do without the services of Michael Krohn-Dehl, who was taken off injured in the first leg of the tie. Shakhtar has their own injury concerns with Marcio Azevedo definitely out, and Dentinho and Oleksandr Hladkyy rated doubtful.
With home advantage, and Shakhtar known for not traveling well on the road, Sevilla should be too strong and really could take this comfortably. But always fear the underdogs, who will make this an intriguing match-up!
