We’re still in shock over the news that 49-year-old Janet Jackson is expecting! And while we could not be happier for the soon-to-be-mom, there is a LOT to be worried about when a woman gets pregnant at such a mature age. Janet faces VARIOUS scary health complications, but the number one thing she needs to keep in check? Her weight!
At nearly 50 years old — her birthday is May 16 — Janet Jackson has to be SUPER careful now that she’s pregnant. With terrifying complications like hypertension and gestational diabetes, the singer needs to take certain precautions in order to protect herself and her child. And while there are many things Janet can do to stay healthy, an expert tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that the very best thing for her is not gaining weight! Find out why below.
“Her diet would need to be carefully watched and her weight, so depending on what weight she started out at, that will determine how much weight she will be allowed to gain. But the goal is to not gain an excessive amount of weight during the pregnancy,” Dr. David Diaz, a reproductive endocrinologist and fertility expert at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center revealed to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY.
Obviously every woman gains weight when pregnant, but Janet needs to be SUPER careful about watching her calorie intake, which most pregnant women don’t need to focus so heavily on. Because of the dangerous risks, Janet’s doctors most likely have her on a strict diet. “They would recommend calorie restriction depending on her pre-pregnancy weight,” Dr. Diaz added. “If she was very underweight they would recommend to increase, but if she was at all overweight they would want to reduce her calories.”
But just why does Janet need to be so conscious of her calorie intake? “The concerns would be things related to normal aging, like increased risk of hypertension also known as high blood pressure,” our expert source revealed. “There is also an increased risk of developing gestational diabetes related to pregnancy, increased risk of blood clotting disorders such as blood clot in the legs or sometimes even in the lungs.” SO scary, right?
But while the health risks are very real, Janet doesn’t exactly have to take it quite as easy as you may think. Just last month, she postponed her world tour announcing that she and her husband, Wissam Al Mana, 41, were planning their family. “I have to rest up, doctors orders,” she explained to her fans. But we’re happy to hear that Janet won’t be bedridden for nine months either.
“Janet would not necessity need to be on bedrest, but if she was starting to bleed or her cervix starts to open, they may recommend bedrest or even putting a suture around her cervix to hold the baby inside,” Dr. Diaz said. Yikes! We wish Janet the best during her pregnancy journey.
What do you think about Janet being pregnant, HollywoodLifers? Are you nervous for her or just super excited?
