Cinco de Mayo has become a bit of an excuse to make margaritas and party, but in case you’re not familiar with its origins, it obviously started out as so much more than that. The Fifth of May is actually a way for Mexico to celebrate its unexpected victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on this date in 1862. Don’t mistake the holiday for Mexico’s Independence Day, though — that takes place on September 16!
The Battle of Puebla was a huge deal for Mexico because their forces were majorly out-numbured when they took on the French army that hadn’t been beat for nearly 50 years.
So, yes, clearly Cinco de Mayo is about much more than just half-priced Mexican food and tequila-infused drinks…although that’s pretty much what it’s become in America! In Mexico, May 5th isn’t observed as a national holiday, but all public schools are closed for the day.
Check out how some stars, including Kristin Cavallari, Ramona Singer and many more, are acknowledging Cinco de Mayo on social media here. There’s even a great recipe from Rachael Ray we know you’ll want to check out!
