You go, girl! Before signing on to ‘X-Men: Apocalypse,’ Olivia Munn passed up the chance to star in another superhero blockbuster, ‘Deadpool.’ Yep, even the leading lady role alongside Ryan Reynolds didn’t please Olivia — see why right here!
Most girls would think Olivia Munn is crazy for turning down the chance to play Ryan Reynolds‘ love interest in Deadpool, but after hearing her reason, they may actually think the actress is an actual superhero. Olivia, 35, revealed her reason for handing the role off to Morena Baccarin in a new interview, and it gives an empowering meaning to the phrase “not just another pretty face”!

As appealing as it may sound to be Ryan’s girlfriend in a film, Olivia explained to American Way Magazine that another girlfriend role was exactly what she didn’t want. Although her role of Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse isn’t nearly as prominent as Vanessa Carlysle (who ended up being played by Morena) in Deadpool, she much preferred to take on a role that was going to physically challenge her rather than being someone’s GF again!
In fact, when she discussed her X-Men role with filmmakers, she wanted to make sure that Psylocke would be as badass as possible — even if she doesn’t have much of a talking part. “I said, ‘Is there a fight scene?’ The fight scene could be her monologue,” she told the mag. “I thought Psylocke was always one of the most lethal characters, and I said, ‘Yes, as long as you’re not using her to be the eye candy. She has really powerful abilities.’ And they said, ‘Yes, that’s an important part.'”
Talk about female empowerment! While we’ve seen Olivia play the role of the gorgeous girlfriend/lover in several films (remember her in Magic Mike?), it sounds like her days of simply playing the pretty girl are over. For being such a stunning woman, we give her mad props for wanting to be more than just that! We were already excited to see X-Men: Apocalypse, but now we can’t wait to see Olivia kick some major butt!
