Kit Harrington sure is good at keeping a secret! Not only were fans of ‘Game of Thrones’ convinced his character Jon Snow had been killed off, so were his fellow cast mates!
We’re learning even more about how the team behind Game of Thrones managed to keep the show’s biggest spoiler ever – that Jon Snow lives – a secret from not just the viewers of the show, but Kit Harington‘s fellow actors as well. The star was forced to lie to the cast and crew of the HBO hit for nearly a year to convince them that his character was really was being killed off.
Kit revealed that he was told his character would survive season five’s cliffhanger that left him apparently stabbed to death, but his fellow cast mates were left in the dark about his fate. After the scripts for the season went out in the summer of 2014, he had to convince not just the actors but the crew as well that he was definitely done with the show following his bloody final scene. That was the only way to guarantee the secret stayed safe.
“At first I thought I would find it fun, this will be a fun game. But I had to lie to a lot of close friends and cast members and crew. The longer it went, the more I felt like I was betraying them. So I did end up letting people in, slowly,” Kit reveals in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.
While some of the cast didn’t believe him, others were heartbroken including Sophie Turner who plays Sansa Stark. “Sophie Turner, bless her, wrote me a really long letter about how much she loved working with me – and I still got it,” Harington says. “That made me chuckle.”
He noted that by the time season six’s scripts went out in the summer of 2015, the cast had pretty much figured it out that Jon would end up alive. Of course the audience didn’t know that until the second episode of the season May 1, when Melisandre helped bring him back from the dead!
