It’s always tough to see contestants go home on ‘The Voice.’ But thanks to the Instant Save, anyone can save themselves from elimination with one last-chance, killer performance — and that’s just what [SPOILER] did in the May 3 episode. The saved singer totally played to his strengths and it paid off in the best way.
Performing for America’s Instant Save is probably one of the most nerve-wracking moments of The Voice contestants’ lives, but if they do it the right way, it’s bound to be a success. When [SPOILER] found himself in the Bottom 2 of the May 3 episode, he gave his Instant Save performance in exactly the way I believe it was intended by creators…and it worked.

It came down to a battle of the comeback artists, Daniel Passino (Team Pharrell) and Nick Hagelin (Team Christina Aguilera), at the end of the elimination episode, but ultimately, it was Nick who came out on top, earning a spot in the Top 9. As it happens every week, each guy got once last chance to sing a song of their choice, and it came down to a vote on Twitter, which Nick won by a landslide.
It’s not that Daniel didn’t sound amazing in his Instant Save performance of “Uptown Funk,” but Nick did everything just right, and it was impossible to beat. Obviously, the young dad is on the show because of his talent, but it’s no secret that he’s also loved by the female audience. Instead of ignoring that fact just because this show is about “the voice,” though,” Nick decided to embrace it, singing Ed Sheeran’s swoon-worthy and beautiful love song “Thinking Out Loud.”
He sounded great while performing the tune, which obviously helped, but he also had the audience completely captivated, and they were cheering for him long after he put the mic down. I mean, who can resist that smile, right?!
Sadly, Daniel’s performance just didn’t ignite a feeling in the crowd this way. He is able to hit some CRAZY high notes, but he saved that big moment for the last second, and by that time, fans already probably had #VoiceSaveNick typed into their Twitter feeds.
I loved Daniel and was sad to see Pharrell lose another artist, but there’s no question in my mind that this was all about Nick tonight. However, he finds himself in a tough position, because Daniel and the previous eliminated contestant, Owen Danoff, were both Instantly Saved in the week before they were sent home. Hopefully this isn’t foreshadowing Nick’s fate next week!
