He’s got a job on his hands! Luke Walton, 36, was named LA Lakers head coach on Apr. 29, admitting he couldn’t turn down the team who he won two NBA championships with in 2009 and 2010. 1. He’s part of a basketball family dynasty
Luke is the son of former UCLA and NBA legend Bill Walton, who also won two NBA championships in 1977 and 1986. with Luke winning two titles as well, they became the first father and son to win multiple championships. They’re a family of winners!
2. Luke’s proved his coaching credentials this season
When Steve Kerr took an indefinite leave of absence after injuring his back after the NBA Finals in 2015, Luke stepped up from assistant coach to interim head coach. Somehow he managed to improve the best team in the land, guiding them to the longest winning streak to start a season in league history. It game them the platform to break the Bulls’ most wins in a season record.
3. What will he be earning as head coach?
Sources have told ESPN that Luke is set for a HUGE payday as Lakers head coach. He’s signed a 5-year deal, with four of those guaranteed. His salary is said to be between $5million – $6 million, with incentives thrown in. Not bad work if you can get it!
4. What has he got to do?
Luke’s got a tough job on his hands in taking the Lakers job. With Kobe Bryant retiring, and the team coming off the back of their worst ever franchise season it’s a big ask to expect him to come in and change the mood spectacularly. But he’s already being championed by former Laker Magic Johnson, who thinks he will bring the mentality of a champion to the suffering NBA giants.
5. He married his high-school sweetheart
When it comes to his love-life, Luke married his longtime girlfriend Bre Ladd in 2013. The two met at Arizona University, where the 6’1″ Bre played volleyball.
