Diego Simeone‘s Atletico Madrid face off against La Liga strugglers Rayo Vallecano in a must-win game to keep up the pace with leaders Barcelona in the title race. Much of Atletico’s success has been down to their coach, Diego. He lives and breathes soccer, and on the touchline you won’t find a more energetic and entertaining man in the Vicente Calderon. But incredibly he’s banned from watching from the touchline and will have to watch from the stands after interfering with play in a recent game by throwing another ball on the pitch.
Now, it’s almost impossible to score against this Atletico defense. With Diego Godin at the heart of their defense, Atletico has conceded just 16 goals in their 35 La Liga games. To put that into perspective, title rivals Real have let in twice as many goals and Barcelona have given 29 away.
But even though they run a tight ship, Atletico does boast attacking players that play with an air of freedom about themselves and can pose a threat to any defense. The reborn Fernando Torres has been leading the line perfectly, without maybe getting enough goals. However, with Antoine Griezmann contributing 29 goals in all competitions this season, they’ve not needed Fernando to score.
In their previous encounter this season, back in December 2015, Atletico eased to a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Angel Correa and Antoine. Atletico wouldn’t mind a repeat scoreline.
With how focused Atletico has been in recent weeks, it’s hard not to imagine them grinding out another to stay neck and neck with Barcelona at the top. We’ll just have to wait and see!
