Hi-C Ecto Cooler is coming back! In honor of the new ‘Ghostbusters’ movie, Coca-Cola is re-releasing the Slimer-green drink! If you wonder why it’s such a big deal, here are 5 things about the favorite drink of ’80s and ’90s kids everywhere.
It was the question on every Ghostbusters fans’ mind after finding out there was a new movie coming: Where’s the Hi-C Ecto Cooler? The long-discontinued drink is also making a major comeback and if you have no idea why this has so many people excited, get to know more about this legendary beverage.
1. Ecto Cooler is old school.
Hi-C Ecto Cooler debuted in 1987 as a promotional tie-in with The Real Ghostbusters cartoon series, per Coca-Cola. It was supposed to be just for a limited time, but the product was so popular, it stayed on the shelves until 2001. With a new Ghostbusters movies coming out, everyone wanted to know: where’s the Ecto cooler?
“Hi-C Ecto Cooler fueled a pop culture phenomenon that is well remembered and beloved by fans to this day,” said Charles Torrey, vice president, Minute Maid/Hi-C Brands, Coca-Cola North America. No kidding!
2. …it’s actually older than people think.
Ecto Cooler was actually a rebranding of an earlier drink from Hi-C called Citrus Cooler, which had been on the shelves since 1965. When Ecto Cooler was discontinued in 2001, it was renamed Shoutin’ Orange Tangergreen. In 2006, it went under another transformation to Crazy Citrus Cooler before it was finally killed in 2007.
3. It comes out ahead of the new movie.
Ghostbusters comes out on July 15, but Hi-C’s Ecto Cooler will be in stores on May 30. That gives fans plenty of time to stock up on supplies while waiting in line to see Melissa McCarthy, 45, Kristen Wiig, 42, Kate McKinnon, 32, and Leslie Jones, 48, bust some ghosts. Fans who can’t wait can try to win it before its release date by following the brand on Facebook (and following its official website, www.Ecto.cool)
4. That can of Ecto Cooler is haunted!
Just like how it was originally sold, Ecto Cooler will come in 10-packs of 6-ounce juice boxes. It’ll also come in six and 12-packs of 11.5 oz. aluminum cans that will turn an eerie shade of supernatural green when chilled! “We wanted to offer something new and fun to reward fans who passionately lobbied us to bring back their beloved brand.” Shannon Richmond, brand director, Minute Maid, Coca-Cola North America.
5. Fans have tried to resurrect Ecto Cooler from the grave.
Though the drink was discontinued in 2001, it was pretty hard to find by then. So, Ghostbusters fans decided to recreate the recipe on their own! If you can’t wait until May 30 to get a taste, all you need is some Kool Aid, orange juice, tangerines, lemonade, sugar and food color. Thankfully, you won’t have to make your own for long.
