It’s never too late to find love! Former U.S. Senator Harris Wofford wed his boyfriend of 15 years on April 30, 20 years after the death of his wife Clare.
Harris Wofford, 90, is tying the knot once again! The former U.S. Senator is set to marry his boyfriend Matthew Charlton, 40, after nearly 15 years together. The senator’s only other marriage was 20 years ago to his wife Clare, who died in 1996. The two were married for 48 years.
In an opinion piece written for The New York Times, Harris details his entire story, and what brought him to this point in his life. The essay is a moving exploration of finding love late in life, and how you never know when you might meet that special someone.
Harris wrote, “At age 70, I did not imagine that I would fall in love again and remarry. But the past 20 years have made my life a story of two great loves.” This second love came as a surprise to both Harris and Matthew who met on a beach in Ft. Lauderdale Florida about 15 years ago.
When detailing how the relationship blossomed between a then 70 year old Harris, and a 25 year old Matthew, he writes,”We took trips around the country and later to Europe together, becoming great friends. We both felt the immediate spark, and as time went on, we realized that our bond had grown into love. Other than with Clare, I had never felt love blossom this way before.”
Among his many accomplishments as a U.S. Senator, Harris also served in the Kennedy administration and helped found the peace corps, so he’s very deserving of a second chance at love in life. “I had a half-century of marriage with a wonderful woman, and now am lucky for a second time to have found happiness.”
