One of the darkest times in Prince’s life was when he and his first wife, Mayte Garcia, lost their son, Gregory. Sadly, a new interview with one of his longtime backup dancers reveals that he never fully recovered from Gregory’s death.
Prince, 57, may have been a visionary in the music industry, but one thing he never got to be was a father. As we mourn his life and career, we can’t forget that he also struggled and even lost his only child, Gregory, just a week after he was born. So sad.
Prince had many great loves throughout the course of his life, but none compare to the love he had for his son, Gregory, when he was born in late 1996. Prince and his first wife, Mayte, welcomed Gregory into the world only to find out that he was suffering from Pfeiffer syndrome. Gregory died a week later due to the genetic disorder, which is known for affecting the skull and bones of infants.
“It was really sad. I think he was really looking forward to being a father,” one of Prince’s dancers, Lindsley Allen, told PEOPLE. “It was very difficult for them and I don’t think they really recovered from that. I felt a very paternal feeling from him but yet that was something that he never really had known.”
Lindsley also shared that Prince and Mayte were so excited to be parents that they had prepared their home for the little one well in advance. Lindsley says they built a playroom for Gregory, as well as a swing set in the backyard. If little Gregory had lived the long, healthy life his parents wished for him, he would have been one very happy little boy who had everything he could dream of.
Sadly, the loss of Gregory was just too hard on Mayte and Prince, and eventually led to the dissolution of their marriage. Mayte later revealed that after losing her son, she also had a miscarriage during a second pregnancy, and that it took her fifteen years to recover.
