Uh-oh, Kylie Jenner is going to get a lot of criticism for this one. The reality star posted a Snapchat video with the Bob Marley filter on 4/20 — yup, the very same filter that sparked an outrage on Twitter with users slamming the social media app for giving everyone blackface. Eek!
Be careful what Snapchat filters you use, Kylie Jenner! The 18-year-old is under fire for Snapchatting with the Bob Marley filter on 4/20, with critics accusing her of promoting blackface. Check out the video here and let us know if you think she should be under fire for her post!
Kylie loves trying out all the filters on Snapchat, so when the Bob Marley face arrived on her app on 4/20, she shared a video of herself rocking rocking the fake dreads, colorful beanie…and dark skin.
While the filter was temporarily added because of Bob’s support for legal marijuana on 4/20, a holiday celebrating cannabis culture, dozens of users are freaking out because it paints a black face on anyone who uses it.
“The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley estate,” a Snapchat spokesperson explained. “It gives people a new way for people to share appreciation for Bob Marley and his music.”
Still, people are commenting on how it’s racist and done in “poor taste,” and actually, it’s not the first time Kylie has found herself in the middle of a blackface scandal — back in 2015, she was accused of darkening her skin for a photo shoot.
“This is a black light and neon lights people lets all calm down,” she explained at the time. We don’t think the 18-year-old really meant to use this filter to be offensive, but we do hope she understands why people are seeing it that way now that it’s blown up so much!
HollywoodLifers, what do you think of Kylie using this filter on Snapchat?
