Michael Strahan is officially stepping down from the ‘Live’ desk — to head to ‘Good Morning America.’
It sounds like Kelly Ripa will be looking for a new co-host. Michael Strahan, who joined the show as Kelly’s cohost four years ago, will be stepping down and heading to Good Morning America full time. He began reporting on the GMA desk part time in 2014, and will begin full time there in September. Who do you think should replace him?
“I look forward to continuing to work with the incredible team at GMA. It is an exciting opportunity to be able to bring unique stories and voices to the audience,” Michael Strahan said in a statement. “My time with LIVE with Kelly and Michael has been transformative, and my departure will be bittersweet. Kelly has been an unbelievable partner, and I am so thankful to her and the entire team. I am extremely grateful for the amazing support I’ve received from all of the fans.”
“Michael has been a stellar addition to the broadcast. Over the past two years on ‘GMA,’ he’s proven to be a tireless and versatile broadcaster with an incredible ability to connect with people, from veterans to American pop culture icons and newsmakers,” said James Goldston, president of ABC News, in a memo to staff sent this morning, via our sister publication, Variety. “He will end a four year run as Kelly Ripa’s co-host on ‘Live!,’ where he has honed his skills as an interviewer with genuine warmth and a quick wit. At ‘GMA,’ he’ll now have even more opportunities to tell stories that inspire, inform and empower people.”
Michael has been on the GMA desk for two days a week for the past two years, then heads over to Live; on Sundays he’s also a sports analyst on NFL Sunday, which films in LA — so he has a ton going on.
