This is so sad. The 21-year-old Swiss athlete was killed in an avalanche on April 19 and she reportedly died on the scene. Our deepest sympathies go out to her family during this difficult time.
Estelle Balet is dead. The World Champion snowboarder was in Orsieres near Switzerland when she was caught in an avalanche. Estelle, 21, was wearing special safety equipment but she sadly was unable to be resuscitated at the scene.
Estelle, who had recently won the Freeride World Tour, was filming a movie, “Exploring the Known” with another snowboarder when the accident happened. “Estelle Balet was a naturally gifted shining star and demonstrated remarkable talent … bringing home her second title as World Champion just a few weeks ago in Verbier,” the Freeride World Tour said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Estelle Balet as we send our deepest sympathy and condolences during this very difficult time.” The Swiss police also released a statement: “Despite immediate efforts to revive her, she died at the scene,” police said. “An investigation has been started to determine the causes of the accident.” Estelle was wearing a helmet and she also had a special airbag too.
Just a few days before her tragic death, she had posted an image to her Facebook page of the Swiss Alps with the caption: “Pretty awesome to get to snowboard with such a view!! Can’t wait for more filming next week.” The funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
Fans immediately reacted on Twitter after the shocking news broke:
