Racquel Smith was seen for the first time since her husband, former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith’s fatal shooting, attending his memorial. Sitting in a wheelchair and looking absolutely desolate, it was a tragic scene. Click through to see the devastating photos.
The memorial for murdered former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith, 34, was held at team’s training facility in Metairie, Louisiana on April 15. Will’s widow, Racquel Smith, 34, who was also shot twice in the legs by Cardell Hayes, 28, attended her late husband’s memorial, her first appearance since the fateful night that changed her life forever. It was an emotional affair for everyone who Will loved, especially Racquel. Click through to see pics from the event.
We cannot imagine what Racquel is going through right now. Will was murdered during a road rage incident on April 9, shot eight times in the back and torso after “exchanging words” with Cardell. Racquel was shot in each leg, an act that left her with a shattered femur and confined her temporarily to a wheelchair. Wearing black head to toe and hiding her eyes behind a pair of huge black sunglasses, Racquel was seen at her late husband’s viewing, taking in the tragic sight of his casket covered in white flowers, backed by massive photos of him playing for the Saints during his NFL heyday.
Will’s memorial was beautiful, and so many of his NFL comrades attended to pay respect to their lost loved one. Pierre Thomas, his former Saints team member, was at the scene of the crash when Will was murdered, and was right by Racquel’s side throughout the memorial. Former teammate Steve Gleason, as well as the New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, Saints head coach Sean Payton, and assistant coach Joe Vitt, were also in attendance. Will was truly loved.
The passenger in Cardell’s Hummer, Kevin O’Neale, has claimed that the shooting was “justifiable homicide,” because Will allegedly threatened to use his own handgun to shoot them. Police found a loaded 9 mm gun in Will’s car. That does not change the fact that a life was lost, a wife widowed, and children orphaned!
HollywoodLifers, our thoughts are with Racquel, and Will’s loved ones during this difficult time.
