Are they the greatest basketball team ever? The Golden State Warriors achieved NBA immortality by downing the Memphis Grizzlies 125-104 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland. The win was Golden State’s 73rd of the season, which means they’ve eclipsed Michael Jordan‘s immense Chicago Bulls team. There’s just no stopping this lot!
The Warriors absolutely dominated throughout the entire game, being up by over 20 points for much of the last half of the game. They were so far ahead in the last quarter that they let their superstar leader Stephen Curry, 28, have some well-deserved rest time on the bench. He is still looking odds on to win his second MVP in a row after his heroics this year.
In winning their 73rd game of the season, with only 9 losses all year, they’ve bettered a 20-year record set by the Bulls in the 95-96 season and lost one less game. It’s hard to see this record ever getting broken again because the level of basketball these two giants played was something no one ever expected to see.
However, it looked a little dicey for the Warriors as they closed in on the record in the beginning of April when they lost twice in three games. Defeats to Boston Celtics and then Minnesota Timberwolves had people doubting if the Warriors were going to do it. However, a sensational win against San Antonio Spurs on the road, snapping the team’s 39-match unbeaten home record, showed that we needn’t have worried.
It would be an absolute travesty if the Warriors don’t go on to the NBA Finals and win the whole thing, because the way they’ve taken every team to the sword this year shows they’re already worthy champs.
