Hello! Happy Disney week peeps! It warms my heart seeing everyone dressed up as Prince Charming and random jungle cats. Who doesn’t love Walt Disney for delighting our homes with decades of his magic. And Zendaya was in the building! I love her, mainly because she’s a fantastic role model. Loved seeing her judge today!
First off let me say this, I love, love, LOVED the opening number on this week’s Dancing with the Stars! The whole show was full of beautiful animation and fun use of visual effects. The producers are truly great at what they do. Dancing Giselle?! Whaaaat?!! Giant toy boxes?! Hayley Erbert as Snow White with her dwarfs?! Brilliant! So much fun! This week is so prop heavy and animation crazy that it can often be one of the most stressful weeks on DWTS. Plus, the show has added extra dancers this week to magnify the individual performances as it’s such a grand week with lots of characters.

So BRITTANY CHERRY is back folks!! Yes you probably saw her kicking butt out there in a gorgeous jungle cat onesie ;) I would have always loved to have done Beauty and the Beast for Disney week but as a Pro dancer you have to be quick to request a Disney movie because they go fast! So I always used to ask the producers weeks in advance and then just pray I suggested it first. Looking back on other seasons, probably for me, the best Disney Week performance on Dancing with the Stars would be James Maslow & Peta Murgatroyd when they danced a contemporary to Frozen‘s “Let it Go.” Peta added magic to it by including floor animation to the dance. STUNNING!
Anyway, this weeks blog, I’m still going to comment a little on the couples left in the competition but I wanted to get a little creative and give you more of an insight into this marvelous show. Not many people really get to see the unparalleled brilliance of the team behind the screen. Walking into the CBS studios on this evening, I see that all the backstage crew have kept up the tradition of wearing Mickey ears while they work. I had a quick selfie with Cindy (and her ears) who works in wardrobe. We did a little video for her niece near the trailers outside the main building. There are roughly 30 trailers on the lot, all numbered and each designated to a Celebrity or a Professional dancer. This means that in-between dress rehearsals and wardrobe fittings there’s a warm, neighborly vibe going on! Sounds almost weird but true! DWTS village, I called it. Witney [Carson] & I were neighbors but we never saw Val [Chmerkovskiy] or Mark [Ballas] for instance because they would be on the other side of the “trailer park!” Cast members keep their doors open to chat to each other, it’s very friendly. I was always trailer 25, last season Hayes [Grier] was 24. I’d always just hang out in his trailer sitting on the desk and telling him what he needs to remember during the dance. Ah I do miss the blank faces he gave me! Hayes, I love you.
Sasha [Farber]‘s call time this week was 8am which is an early one for him actually but he doesn’t complain because my call time would be 7am! Yep, the female Pros & Celebs of DWTS start at 7am (seriously!) and go straight into hair and make up spending up to 90 mins in each. Within this time you also have to get your body gloriously bronzed by standing in your trailer and getting sponged down. Oh the glamour of it all! But anyway, I’m in danger of waffling on so I’ll get onto the dancing tonight…
Antonio Brown & Sharna Burgess
Antonio gave us a wicked jazz number as a “2016 Cool Cat Aladdin.” It was very clean, the use of the male troupe made a big difference and Sharna did a great job with the choreo. I think Antonio rehearsed this a lot because he seemed way more comfortable during this dance, maybe it was the dapper white suit??! But I really don’t think it was worthy of a 9 score, let alone three 9’s and an 8. That’s not to be rude or anything, just 9 is an almost perfect score and I feel Antonio wasn’t that during this dance.
Marla Maples & Tony Dovolani
Next up was the Little Mermaid AKA Marla Maples. Despite my best effects not to feel this way, I was left underwhelmed by Marla & Tony’s foxtrot. I just felt there was not enough attention paid to the transitions still and there were times when I saw Marla stuck in-between her moves. Not seamless. But the judges liked it and they scored four sevens.I think a lot of people predicted her to be safe tonight and for Doug Flutie to be in danger. Even though it was the end of the road for her tonight, I hope Marla had a wonderful time during her season and can be happy about what she’s done. I mean, she got to be the little mermaid!
Nyle DiMarco & Peta Murgatroyd
Wow, I’m not even going to criticize Nyle’s samba one bit!!!! I smiled so hard during this dance! I saw Peta in the hallway just before the show (I was quite overdressed obviously). I told her how much I adore her and Nyle together this season. A stand out part of their routine was a percussion section Peta had choreographed using the pots and pans. It just proved to the judges that Nyle can 100% stay on time with the music. The back flip and lovely butt shake towards the end were bonus for me as I thought the whole thing was a stand up performance. Finalists? I sure hope so. They got 8,8,9,9.
Doug Flutie & Karina Smirnoff
Nyle is a tough act to follow and it was Doug who had that task. I agree with Carrie Ann & Zendaya on their comments to Doug. I think this dance didn’t come together for them on the night. Poor Doug, I felt for him. He didn’t look comfortable out there and so I wasn’t really comfortable watching him. I can understand he is a perfectionist, so him breaking the cane during rehearsals didn’t surprise me at all. To their surprise, Tom informed Doug & Karina they were safe and did anyone see Wanya’s face when the camera cut to him?! 😂😂😂😂
Kim Fields & Sasha Farber
Go Kim Fields!!! I hope so much they make it all the way. Best chemistry between a partnership on this season by a long way. And that’s entertaining to watch. I mean, the rehearsal footage featured Sash burping in Kim’s face and commenting on her choice of sports bra! Hahaha the dance itself was so joyful, using the talented troupe ladies as gorgeous jungle cats. I would say though there was a big gap between them at times which they should try work on for their next ballroom dance. But besides that I truly loved it, including their faces and reactions! Sash came home very happy. I’m so proud of this week for them, they will have a hard time not dancing together next week. They scored 8,8,8,8.
Jodie Sweetin & Keo Motsepe
After Kim was another fierce woman, Jodie. She looked beautiful tonight, I truly don’t believe it was her fault that she missed a chunk of her Cha Cha choreography at the beginning. The live studio audience can be really REALLY loud so the music is hard to hear. I also think the routine was hectic and should have been more of the solid basics so Jodie could execute them relaxed and calm. There was too much going on in my opinion. But Jodie you are a great dancer, I hope she stays for a long while as I think this competition means a lot to her. They scored 7,6,7,7!
Von Miller & Witney Carson
Witney looked soooooo beautiful tonight! That dress!! 😍 The Vienesse Waltz from her and Von was so charming. I really did enjoy it. The routine didn’t use the floor very much and Von should work on his smoothness but I think scoring all 8’s was deserved. It’s great to see improvement. Von has great extension, I wonder how he will do in the switch up week! Watch more DWTS on Amazon here!
Ginger Zee & Val Chmerkovskiy
Ginger was next as Belle from Beauty and the Beast (I’m so jealous) Her dance with Val was fantastic, I adored it! She performed the heck out of that foxtrot, it was sharp with her head and synchronized timing yet she had such great stretch through her sides too. I saw massive amounts of technique from her, from posture to footwork to extensions. Such an uplifting number to watch. Neat idea to have the fountain in the middle of the floor also. Well done Ginger & great routine Val (plus nice rats tail)! High scores of 9,9,9,9
Wanya Morris & Lindsay Arnold
Wanya and Lindsay proved how competitive they are with a super intense Lion King Samba. He is such a natural mover. It wasn’t my most favorite Wanya performance so I think their scores (8,9,9,9) were quite generous. But there was a lot of content in there. I’m never super in love with Samba on a celebrity. It’s seriously THE hardest dance to do as the bounce action literally takes years to master. So I can appreciate that this was a stellar job from Wanya & Lindsay.
Paige VanZant & Mark Ballas
Closing the night with my favorite performance was Paige & Mark. And YES!!! I freaking loved this one! For the first time I saw something completely different in Paige. She glowed. She was so feminine, her posture was fantastic and there was zero awkwardness in this dance. She truly performed this to its fullest, I wasn’t quite prepared for how awesome she was. Mark knows I love his dances, and even this one was one of his best for me. Well deserving of your 9,9,9,9 scores.
Sadly, Miss Marla & Tony left. Again, I hope she is proud. The competition is really getting intense and now it’s switch up week!! Spanner in the works! Sorry this blog has been long, have a great week lovelies. Let me know your favorites and don’t forget to vote!
