This is so crazy. The murder of New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was certainly no accident, but it even seems the alleged gunman could’ve killed him out of revenge. Get the scary details right here.
Cardell Hayes was allegedly the gunman who shot and killed New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith, 34, after an altercation following a rear-end car accident between the two on April 9. While the murder seemed to have no reason other than a situation that got out of control, new information shows that Cardell may have shot Will out of revenge for his late father.

Just hours before Will was killed, he was dining with a former New Orleans Police Department captain named Billy Ceravolo, even snapping a picture together during their outing. Ironically, Billy happened to be one of the officers Cardell named in a lawsuit against the city in 2005, when his father was shot dead by police. Although Capt. Ceravolo said he was not at the scene of the shooting — nor that was he aware that Cardell had named him in the 2005 lawsuit — his friendship with Will does seem to provide some motivation for Cardell to take the NFL player’s life.
After Cardell’s father, Anthony, got into an argument with a pharmacy employee in 2005, police said he lunged at an officer and two Sgts. with a pocket knife in hand. Officer Gary Kessel shot Anthony, who was allegedly mentally unstable, dead after the threat. Capt. Ceravolo was not directly involved in Anthony’s death, but he was still one of the six Cardell named when suing the city over his father’s death. The case was closed in 2011, according to Daily Mail.
While police had no information to suggest that Cardell’s father’s killing was linked to the fatal shooting of Will, the connection is a bit eerie. As Will was on his way home from having dinner with Capt. Ceravolo on April 9, Cardell rear-ended Will in his Hummer around 11:30 p.m. This sparked an argument between the two of them that quickly turned fatal when Cardell shot Will multiple times with a handgun. He also shot Will’s wife, Racquel Smith, twice in the leg, but she survived.
NOPD superintendent Michael Harrison said that authorities are still investigating Cardell’s motive for the shooting, as well as whether he knew Will prior to the fatal incident. Whether Cardell killed Will as a means of vengeance for his father, he will be given no mercy — Cardell has been charged with second-degree murder, and is currently being held at BKG Booking in New Orleans.
