No one deserves to win more than Melissa McCarthy! The 45-year-old actress won the coveted Comedic Genius Award at the MTV Movie Awards on April 10 and made sure to use her platform for some good. In true fashion, she began cracking jokes the moment she took the stage but also made a point to talk about all of the talented women in comedy who came before her!
Whether it’s Gilmore Girls, Samantha Who?, Private Practice or Mike & Molly, Melissa has been entering our homes over the years and making us laugh. She’s been busting her butt to make it big in Hollywood and it’s so wonderful to see her finally achieve such great success. Kevin Hart and The Rock came out to present Melissa the award who actually crowd-surfed her way to the stage. “I may be the first woman to recieve this award,” she said. “But I am certainly not the first one to deserve it. I think I’m a walking human patchwork of all the remarkable funny women who I’ve loved and studied over the years. And I am only here because Carol Burnett, Jane Curtin, Phyllis Diller, Whoopi Goldberg, Terri Garr, Madelince Kahn, Lucille Ball, Gilda Radner, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Diane Keaton, Tracey Ullman, Bette Midler, Lilly Tomlin and my mom, Sandy Lynn McCarthy who taught me not to fear being the butt of a joke and taught me not to worry about being likeable or perfect and to lovingly go for the kill!” Melissa then closed her speech with: “Who knew Bruce Springsteen could get even cooler?” Wow, what an incredible speech and so amazing that she paid tribute to all of the amazingly hilarious and talented women who came before her!

It was really wonderful that she called out Bruce, for protesting anti LGBT laws in North Carolina. Bruce announced on April 8 that he would not be performing in Greensboro, NC., on April 10 and would be giving the 15K ticket holders refunds instead. He is boycotting the “bathroom law” that requires individuals to use the bathrooms which match the gender on their birth certificate, which many believe to be a violation of the transgender community’s human rights.
