It’s the way he was meant to go out. Manny Pacquiao, 37, may have just drawn the curtain on a glittering boxing career in the most perfect way. The Filipino tough guy saw off his old enemy Timothy Bradley, 32, in a third welterweight battle at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Apr. 9 in a thrilling contest.
Manny looked slightly sharper, stronger and quicker than Timothy this time round, as the two finally put an end to their rivalry in what is believed to be Manny’s last professional fight. He confirmed it in the post-fight interview, but some skeptics believe he may be tempted again to step into the ring.
But if it is, then he couldn’t have gone out in more fitting style. Manny landed some vicious punches, knocking Timothy to the ground twice in a convincing win on a points decision. The three judges all scored the fight 116-110 in his favor.
Now, Manny is set for an entirely different battle as he is running for Senate in the Philippines on May 9 as he continues his rise from boxer to politician.
“I was looking for a knockout every round. His style is to counter punch. But I countered him. He was different to the last two fights, and he improved,” Manny said after the contest. “I can still fight – but I made the decision to retire tonight, work for my people and spend more time with my family.”
After earning over $500 million during his 21-year career, and coming out of the sport relatively unhurt, it may be time for Manny to call it a day. But he’s given us some amazing memories over the years.
