Bryson DeChambeau, 22, has taken The Masters 2016 by storm and he hasn’t turned pro yet. The Californian-born golf star is sitting amongst the favorites for one of golf’s most coveted prizes, which really is amazing going for an amateur. But who is Bryson? Let us fill you in on the facts you need to know about America’s next great sporting star.
He is the reigning amateur champion.
Bryson might not be well-known to us on the professional level, however he’s a boss when it comes to the amateur game. In fact, he is the current NCAA individual champion and U.S. Amateur title holder, and has boasted that he plans to join the PGA Tour when he wins The Masters!
He’s already got a multi-million sponsorship deal lined up after college.
Even though he’s still attending Southern Methodist University student, a number of high-profile sports companies battled to sign Bryson up to major sponsorship deal. Cobra-Puma were the ones who got their man, signing him up to a multi-million dollar deal for when he does join the PGA Tour.
He’s not just a amazing sportsman.
Bryson got accepted to SMU on a scholarship because of his golfing abilities, but he’s a smart cookie too. In fact, he’s majoring in physics and his idol growing up wasn’t Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson… no, it’s Albert Einstein! “You look at guys who have been so innovative in the world today, they were called weird or quirky,” he told ESPN recently. “The one I go back to is Albert Einstein. Nobody thought he would amount to anything. He is kind of an idol of mine, too.”
He’s a record breaker already.
In winning the U.S. Amateur title and NCCA Championship in 2015, Bryson became one of only 5 golfers to have achieved that in the same year. He’s in good company, the others are, Tiger, Phil, Jack Nicklaus and Ryan Moore.
