1. She owes her fighting career to her sister.
“It’s a very simple life,” Amanda said of her hometown of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, according to MMA Junkie. “Just the basic necessities. Family and God played a very big part of my upbringing.” Her family led her to trying out jiu-jitsu, as her sister invited a 17-year-old Amanda to check out the dojo. Amanda signed up for classes and the rest is MMA history.
2. Amanda has fewer losses than Miesha.
Miesha goes into UFC 200 with five losses, whereas her challenger only has four. Amanda lost her debut match against Ana Maria in 2008, suffered a TKO in a 2011 clash with Alexis Davis, 31, and lost her 2013 fight with Sarah D’Alelio, 35, by decision. Her most recent defeat came in 2014, according to UFC.com, when Cat Zinago, 33, knocked Amanda out at UFC 178. Since then, The Lioness has won her last three fights.
3. She can win in a variety of ways.
Amanda trained in boxing prior to getting into jiu-jitsu and it shows. 9 of her 12 wins are by knockout, according to SherDog. However, she can bust out a submission hold, as she won her battle against Raquel Pa’aluhi, 25, in 2012 with a rear-naked choke. She pulled the same move on Sara McMann, 35, at UFC Fight Night 73.
4. A fellow MMA fighter has captured Amanda’s heart.
Amanda may go to war whenever she steps inside the UFC octagon, but outside, she and fellow fighter, Nina Ansaroff, 30, are the sweetest of sweethearts. Nina has called Amanda her “cuddle buddy,” and she even dropped a not-so-subtle hint that she wants to get married to Amanda! Whenever these two aren’t throwing punches at their opponents, they’re hanging out, hand-in-hand.
5. Amanda has an adorable pet.
Her nickname is Leoa (or The Lioness) but she’s cute like a kitten with her pet hedgehog, Veceslao. Amanda loves posing with her pet, and while she looks adorable, don’t forget: she can probably knock you out in less than ten seconds. Will she knock out Miesha and become the third new Bantamweight champion in three fights?
