This is so sad. A University of Texas student was found dead in a creek on April 5, and two days later, the victim was identified as freshman dancer Haruka Weiser. Get all of the tragic details here.
The University of Texas mourns the heartbreaking loss of Haruka Weiser, 18, whose body was discovered on April 5 after she was brutally murdered and left for dead in a nearby creek area. Officials announced April 7 that the murder victim was Haruka, leaving her family devastated and her fellow UT students stunned.
Haruka, who was in her first year at the university studying Theater and Dance, was reported missing on April 3 when her roommate called the university’s police department around 11:30 p.m. After Haruka was seen leaving the campus’ drama building, she “never made it to her dormitory,” Austin Police Chief Troy Gay said in an April 7 press conference. Initially authorities could not locate Haruka, but tragically discovered her remains in the Waller Creek area — just minutes from campus.
Chief Gay added that Haruka’s death was ruled a homicide after an autopsy. While we can’t imagine how devastating this is for Haruka’s family, fortunately officials have a lead on a suspect. A surveillance camera caught a 6-foot-tall African-American male walking a red bicycle on the north end of the school’s stadium the night of Haruka’s disappearance.
As a result of Haruka’s murder, President Fenves assured that campus security has been increased, with the Austin Police Department providing 20 extra officers in addition to the campus officers. Counseling is also being offered, as Haruka’s death has left many students in a state of shock.
“We know very little and it’s putting people a little on edge,” said Jess Neuhauser, a junior at UT, according to People. “It felt weirdly quiet [on campus].”
In a statement from University President Gregory Fenves, Haruka was remembered as “a beloved member of our dance community, liked and admired by her classmates and respected by professors for her intelligence and spirit.” Continuing his statement in a press conference, President Fenves added, “the unimaginable brutality against Haruka is an attack against our entire family.”
