They’re baaaaack. Simon, Randy and Paula returned to the stage that we fell in love with them on — well, they were in the chairs back then, but still!
Anything is possible on the finale of American Idol! Simon Cowell told everyone he couldn’t make it to the finale — but he did! First Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson came out on stage at Idol on April 8 to give Ryan Seacrest props for being the only one that lasted the entire 15 seasons — and then they gave him an actual prop: the American Idol sign. But then, out came Simon, shocking everyone!

Even Ryan Seacrest was surprised. “You guys are my best friends now, and I’m going to miss you,” Simon said even choking up! “I’m feeling quite emotional now.” Well, we were too, Simon — we can’t even lie. It was quite emotional to see them all on that stage together.
Now of course, these were the judges for the first eight seasons until Kara DioGuardi was added as a fourth judge. Paula left after season eight, and was replaced by Ellen DeGeneres; Simon ducked out after season nine; and Randy left after season 13.
Before the finale, Simon spoke with our sister publication, Variety, admitting he wasn’t surprised about the show’s end. “No one can complain after 15 years. It’s had a fantastic run, great memories. For me, I had the best time of my life. But then, you move on and other things come along.”
He also spoke to Yahoo, saying that after he and Paula left, the show wasn’t the same. “To be honest I think it changed more significantly once Paula left, at least for me,” Simon said. “The show was never the same because she and I had such a connection and such a shorthand together.”
