Sevilla have been the team to beat in the Europa League, having won the last two competitions. And despite living in the shadows of Barcelona and Real Madrid, they’ve won 5 European competitions in their history, so coach Unai Emery will be hopeful the Red & Whites are victorious in this one. But even he will know that being favorites doesn’t mean they will march into the semis.
Sevilla has an embarrassment of riches upfront and they will have to decide between using french hot-shot Kevin Gameiro, or former Bilbao favorite Fernando Llorente. The home fans will surely give him a good reception should he start.
Bilbao will be without their influential midfield star Raul Garcia, who is suspended, and French central defender Aymeric Laporte who is absent with a broken leg. He will miss the remainder of the season.
Sevilla have had the upper hand on their Basque rivals in their recent games. In fact, Sevilla have won them both 2-0, including their Jan. 9 game when Kevin scored twice to sink Bilbao. Sevilla fans will hope for more of the same in this game.
It’s hard to look past Sevilla, given their recent success over Bilbao and their hunger to finish the season with a bang and another Europa League final berth. It’ll be a fascinating game either way.
