1. La’Porsha & Trent’s throwback duet
What better way to kick off the show than with some nostalgia?! Season 15’s finalists, La’Porsha Renae and Trent Harmon, helped kick off the show by performing Marvin Gaye’s “It Takes Two,” which is the same exact song Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini sang in the first ever finale back in 2002. Talk about full circle!
2. Kelly Clarkson’s incredible medley
The show’s OG winner is about to have a baby, so she couldn’t quite make it to the finale, but she was at the show just weeks ago and taped a very special segment for this night. In a mind-blowing performance, Kelly proved just how many hits she has by singing a bunch of her singles, throwing it all the way back to songs like “Miss Independent” and “Since You Been Gone.” And, of course, she concluded with “A Moment Like This,” her very first solo track and the first song she sang after being crowned Season 1’s winner.
3. Keith Urban’s very special guest
Judge Keith Urban had a very special friend join him for his quick time on stage — Season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood! Two of country music’s biggest names on one stage? YES PLEASE! The duo’s rendition of “Start Draggin’ My Heart Around” was beyond words, and it’s not even the first time we’ll be seeing Carrie tonight!
4. Jennifer Lopez brings the house down
Just hours after dropping her amazing new single “Ain’t Your Mama” (no, seriously, it’s totally going to be this summer’s biggest jam), Jennifer Lopez took the Idol stage to perform the surefire hit for the first time. J.Lo always puts on a show to be remembered, and this, of course, was no different. After performing the song in a 50s-style, retro maid outfit, the 46-year-old stripped down to a sexy purple number to rock out to “Let’s Get Loud.” Talk about making an exit! Stream J.Lo’s music completely unlimited and ad-free HERE.
5. The 3 Divas
Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia and Latoya London are arguably three of the most powerful singers in Idol history, and for the big finale, they all joined together for a performance we’ll never forget. Those voices are out of this WORLD!
6. David Bowie tribute
Producers gathered the “White Guys With Guitars” winners, Phillip Phillips, Lee DeWyze, David Cook, Nick Fradiani and Kris Allen for one touching tribute to the late David Bowie. The joke that these guys all won Idol and fit the same exact stereotype is pretty funny, but during this performance, they each proved why people were so insistent on voting for them in their respective seasons — true talent.
7. Randy Jackson & Paula Abdul return with a HUGE surprise
Two of the show’s original judges, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, just couldn’t resist making a live appearance in the finale, and just as they were ready to talk about how Simon Cowell couldn’t make it, the guy who started it all showed up right on stage surprising EVERYONE! He made a touching thank you speech and even called Paula and Randy his best friends. So uncharacteristic! Oh, and then one of the most memorable Idol contestants ever, William Hung, made a quick cameo to perform “She Bangs.” AMAZING!
8. The finalists get some brand new CARS
Even the runner-up is getting a pretty darn sweeeet consolation prize! La’Porsha and Trent were gifted with brand new Ford cars just 15 minutes before one of then was announced as the winner, and their genuine excitement was so exciting to see! Oh, and we also got to see some throwback Ford music videos from past contestants, and it was pretty hilarious.
9. Carrie Underwood rocks the stage
Carrie is, numbers-wise, the most successful Idol contestant ever, and she proved just why she’s made such an impact on the music industry by performing her emotional and inspiring hit “Something In The Water.” Since winning the show during Season 4, she’s literally become one of the most iconic names in music, and us country fans are SO thankful to Idol for giving her this start.
10. A winner is crowned
After major anticipation, the moment we’d been waiting for finally came — time to crown the show’s final winner ever. It came down to La’Porsha and Trent, two different but equally deserving singers, and with just moments left in the broadcast, host Ryan Seacrest announced that Trent will join history as just one of 15 winners. So incredible!
