I know, I know that Taylor Swift has long been on a mission with her ‘girl squad’ to prove that women can be friends — not just frenemies — but last night, she and Selena Gomez really demonstrated how true that is.
Last night, April 3, was a major milestone for Girl Power, with Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez showing us how it’s done at the iHeartRadio Music Awards. It was a huge night for both talented young women, with Selena taking home the award for Triple Threat and Taylor landing four of the coveted prizes, including Best Tour and Album of the Year. But here’s the best thing about all this: both stars took the opportunity onstage at the awards show, to make a statement about the importance of female friendship.
Taylor Swift explained in her acceptance speech for Female Artist of the Year that it was her girlfriends who deserved credit for helping her to make the all- important decision to move from the country genre into pop music. “The decision to make a pop album was not made in a conference room or by a record label. These decisions were made in my kitchen with my girlfriends and the women in my life,” she told the audience. Now, as we know, Taylor has made a very public and committed effort to build a “girl squad” of supportive female friends including Selena, Karlie Kloss, Zendaya, Jaime King, Hailee Steinfeld, the Haim sisters, Lena Dunham, Serayah, and of course her childhood BFF, Britany Maack.
Taylor has been reacting to the age-old ridiculous myth that women can never truly be friends, and are always rivals for men, plum jobs and other desirable assets. Taylor, on the other hand, has also had a well-publicized feud with former friend Katy Perry, but that bad blood appears to be over “stolen” dancers — so at least it falls into the category of a business rivalry. Katy aside, Taylor has been dedicated to her female friends in an exceptionally role modelesque way, and Selena reinforced the sentiment last night.

Completely ignoring the fact that Taylor beat her out for the honor for Female Artist of the Year, Selena presented her BFF with the Album of the Year award. “…The iHeartRadio Music Award goes to my girl T-Swizzy, Taylor Swift,” Sel proudly announced before giving her a big onstage hug and handing over the award. Kind of ironically, before announcing Taylor as the winner, Selena said, “Relationships come and go, but a great album, that’s with you forever.”
Ironic because Selena and Taylor are actually proving that close female relationships — friendships — are the things that really will be with you forever!
Do you agree, Hollywoodlifers — have Taylor and Selena put to bed the myth that women can’t truly be friends? Let me know.
