Prom is fast approaching, which means it’s time to start thinking on hair ideas! Taking our inspiration from celebs like Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lawrence, no matter what your style preference, there’s a textured updo or sleek, long look perfect for you.
While awards season is winding down, we’re bookmarking some of our favorite styles we saw walk down the red carpet for prom. From the more intricate braided style worn by Olivia Wilde at the 2016 Oscars to Selena Gomez‘s sleek and straight hair at the Vanity Fair after party, follow these hair how-tos for the finishing touch to your prom look.
If you’re wearing a classic cut gown in a solid color like Brie Larson did for the Oscars, consider following her lead and throwing in a bit of sparkle to your hair look. Mara Roszak created Brie’s polished waves and Swarovski crystal embellished hair look working with drugstore brand L’Oréal Paris (and a $1,125 hair comb from Jennifer Behr, nbd).
To get the look, Mara prepped Brie’s damp hair with L’Oréal Paris Advanced Haircare Extraordinary Oil Transforming Oil-in-Cream before blow drying it and parting it down the middle. To add soft waves, Mara used the one-inch ghd Curve Classic Curling Iron, setting with L’Oréal Paris Elnett Hairspray for hold and L’Oréal Paris Advanced Haircare Nutri-Gloss High Shine Glossing Mist for a super shiny finish. Trade out the Swarovski comb for a more wallet-friendly option like this one from Scunci and you’re prom picture ready.
For another sleek hair option, copy Selena, who wore her dark locks loose and perfectly straight. For her glossy shine, apply a serum like Pantene Truly Natural Shine Serum+Argan Oil from the mid-lengths through the ends of your hair while it’s damp. Blow dry your hair and run a flat iron through it before finishing with another tiny pump of the shine serum if your hair is frizz-prone.
For an easy-to-achieve updo, consider Jennifer Lawrence‘s twisted low knot from Patricia Arquette‘s Dinner For Equality. Perfect for shorter lob styles like Jennifer’s, load your hair up with your favorite dry shampoo or texturizer for grip, then twist the top sections of your hair back, joining them in a low bun at the nape of your neck.
If it’s an intricate look that you want, start practicing your braiding skills. Chrissy Teigen wore five braids in one to the Oscars, adding volume and texture to her hair with Tresemmé Beauty-Full Volume Mousse and Tresemmé Beauty-Full Volume Hair Maximizer before blowing her hair dry. Leaving the crown of the head loose, hair guru Jen Atkin created five, three-strand braids across her head, joining them into one oversized braid once she reached the nape of the neck.
Olivia went for a more pulled together braided look, with stylist Lona Vigi parting her hair to the side and creating two loose French braids on either side of her head. Olivia’s braids were then pinned into a low knot at the nape of her neck to finish the look.
