Red card! US women’s soccer champ Abby Wambach was arrested for DUI on April 2 in Portland, Oregon after running a red light! Read on for all the details!
Abby Wambach, 36, failed a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer on April 2 in Portland, Oregon, according to TMZ! Police officer pulled over the retired US women’s soccer star in the middle of the night when she ran a red light in the downtown district. She was later charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence.
Multnomah County police have not released to the public what her blood alcohol level was at the time of the incident (legally drunk in the United States is .08). Arresting officers at the scene said that the World Cup star was “polite and cooperative,” according to TMZ. Abby was taken to the Multnomah County Jail at approximately 2:02am for booking, and released on her own recognizance several hours later.
Abby has lived in Portland since 2012. She’s a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and women’s soccer’s all-time leading scorer in international play. She’s amazing. Abby lead the US women’s soccer team to victory at the 2015 World Cup in July, and announced her retirement from the sport in October 2015.
The team captain played her final game in December 2015, and teared up as she gave an emotional speech to her beloved teammates and friends. “I just want to genuinely express how much I’ve given myself to this team and how important…how important it is to give all of yourself to whatever you want to do in your life, as a passion,” she said, chocking back tears.
