Lionel Messi may be the current Ballon d’Or winner, but he was blown away by Cristiano Ronaldo in El Clasico on Apr. 2. The Sultan of the Stepover scored the winning goal against Barcelona in a 2-1 win for Real Madrid. Watch his strike here!
It had to be him! All the talk before El Clasico, the eagerly anticipated match-up between Barcelona and Real Madrid, was about World Footballer of the Year Lionel Messi, 28, and heartthrob Cristiano Ronaldo, 31. Who was going to get the better of the other in the game at Camp Nou on Apr. 2? Step-forward Cristiano, who netted the crucial winner for his team!
The game was delicately poised at 1-1 when Cristiano struck a knife through Barcelona’s fans’ hearts with a late winner. Barcelona had led originally thanks to a headed goal from a corner by Shakira‘s handsome partner Gerard Pique. Karim Benzema soon leveled things with a spectacular overhead kick. Then, it all boiled down to Cristiano!
Gareth Bale hung a cross up in the Barcelona penalty area, crosses were a achilles heel for the Catalans all game. The ball went all the way to the back post where Cristiano was lurking dangerously. He brought the ball down on his chest before swinging his right leg at the ball and slamming it home. There was just 5 minutes left on the clock when Cristiano scored, which gave Barça and Lionel little time to recover.
As soon as he scored, Cristiano turned towards the Barcelona fans who were giving him a torrid time with abuse during the heated 90 minutes. But he did completely outshine Lionel, who had a terrible game for the hosts. He didn’t even register a shot at goal in his time on the pitch.
Aside from a AWOL Lionel, and Cristiano’s winning goal, Real had to play the game with 10 men after their captain Sergio Ramos was sent off in the 82nd minute. But rather than be weakened by playing with a man less, that seemed to give Real even more determination to succeed.
The win for Real was no more than they deserved, as soon as they went 1-0 down they were the better team and were unlucky to have had a goal disallowed midway through the second half. Gareth was adjudged to have committed a foul as he jumped for the ball to head it home. Still, it didn’t matter because his team won!
