At the debate, Mellie and Hollis are going AT each other’s throats, while VP Ross just can’t seem to focus. Hollis takes a MAJORLY low blow by calling Mellie out for having her “ex-husband’s ex-mistress,” Olivia of course, running her campaign, and things are already tense as Sally Langston confirms, “We’re just gettin’ started!”
After getting a little confidence boost from Fitz, Susan finally has her moment when she shares an emotional story about her dead husband, John, and how she believes her silence over an issue is what killed him. The crowd erupts in a round of applause, and despite their breakup, David joins Susan on stage for quite the picturesque moment, just like Liz wanted.
The VP is the clear winner of the debate, and Mellie is really down about how much America hates her, but of course, Olivia promises to get her in the Oval. To prove that point, she brings Susan’s little secret to the Gladiators — and we learn that the man in Susan’s story wasn’t even her real husband!, Yup, she’s a total LIAR!
Susan is PISSED when she finds out that the public really only cares about her relationship with David, but he vows to stand by her and help paint whatever picture she needs to win the nomination. He’s even willing to make himself look really bad to the world if she wants a public breakup blaming him! But Susan decides to play the romance card and makes a national TV appearance with David, so he thinks things are okay between them again…until she tells him he’s nothing “but a prop” to her. Susan is taking control!
Meanwhile, back at OPA, Olivia, Quinn and Huck devise a plan to expose Susan’s secret by seeing if the VP was illegaly obtaining John’s army benefits — and they discover that John wasn’t even Susan’s daughter, Casey’s, father! So now, of course, they have to find out who really is.
Olivia turns to Vargas’ brother for the deets, and by giving him a little more info about Edison, he points her in the right direction — prison, where Casey’s real dad is. Olivia offers him a deal: She’ll use the people she knows in the government to get him out of jail…if he takes a paternity test to prove he’s Casey’s dad.
Edison freaks out on Eli when he learns that Olivia spilled his rehab secret to Vargas’ camp, but of course, Papa Pope is NOT having it. With Jake watching in enjoyment, Eli gives Edison a brutal lecture warning him not to “forget who the boss is around here,” and it looks like Olivia’s ex is finally starting to realize what he got himself into.
Much to Cyrus and Vargas’ camp’s disdain, a nurse from the hospital where Edison was allegedly treated comes forward and denies that he was ever there. Now, Vargas has a bone to pick with Olivia because he thinks she fed him false information. The battle is on!
Olivia is livid when Susan’s ex, Ronnie, refuses to do the paternity test, and threatens that she’ll plant something incriminating in his prison cell if he doesn’t get on-board with the plan. Huck and Quinn aren’t happy about it, but of course, Olivia gets Ronnie to shake his head in agreement to her demands. Huck doesn’t want to play dirty and destroy Casey’s life with the truth, though, and Quinn looks to be jumping on his team.
Quinn brings the situation to Abby, begging her to help since Olivia’s “crossing the line,” and they get Fitz to head to OPA to talk some sense into her. In an intense argument, Fitz explains that he doesn’t want Mellie and Susan’s campaigns to be run “dirty” like his was when he ran with Olivia by his side (i.e. Defiance), and we can see Olivia starting to come around.
Susan is devastated when Fitz explains what Olivia wants Ronnie to do, and she begs him to strike a counter deal with Casey’s dad so her secret isn’t exposed. But Fitz has another idea: How about she owns up to it? He’ll still support her, and he’s confident the American people will, too. Fitz finally breaks down and tells Susan the story of how he didn’t “earn” his place in office, hoping it can convince her that she’ll be a better candidate than he ever was.
It turns out that none of this matters at all, though, because Fitz later tells Susan he has some “bad news” and over at OPA, Quinn reveals Ronnie hung himself in prison before his tell-all interview.
While all this is going on, unlikely pair Marcus and Mellie are prepping for her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and although things are tense between them at first, he finally gets her to relax ahead of the TV appearance. She even reads a series of mean tweets and the audience eats it up! Over at Vargas’ camp, Cyrus finally gets Francisco to get push his brother out of the picture, making the former Chief of Staff the new head of the campaign.
The episode ends with a sweet moment between Olivia and Fitz: Despite all their drama, they share a drink, and he lets her know, “I’m gonna kick your a**” with a smile. Susan and Mellie are SO ready to bring it!
