Yikes! After being cited on multiple traffic violations on March 24, UFC champion, Jon Jones, has been arrested! Not only was the fighter accused of drag racing, but he also MAJORLY insulted a police officer and violated his parole. But the worst part? Jon is supposed to headline UFC 197 in less than one month — is he officially out of the ring?
Jon Jones, 28, aka one of the best mixed martial arts fighters in the world, may have to put his career on hold while he sits in jail! The talented fighter was pulled over by police on March 24 for alleged drag racing, and he ended up with five traffic violations in the process. On March 29, Jon was officially arrested because the incident breached his probation. But while Jon claims he was most definitely NOT drag racing, his case is in the hands of a judge now. And fans are freaking out that he may have to forfeit his big fight!
“UFC is aware that Jon Jones turned himself into the Albuquerque Police Department this morning for a potential probation violation stemming from a traffic stop last week,” a statement from the UFC read. “UFC has been in touch with Jones’ legal team and will have no further comment until the organization has had appropriate time to gather necessary information.” So while the UFC itself couldn’t offer any signs of hope for Jon’s fans, his personal management team sounded more optimistic about the possibility of Jon still being able to fight come April 23.
“Jon and his team are taking this very seriously, and we will let the legal process play out,” the athlete’s team told MMA Fighting. “We are confident he will be released once he has an opportunity to explain to the judge the facts in this case.” Wow! It sure sounds like Jon’s people believe he will be out of hot water in no time and that this was just all one big misunderstanding.
But after all, there IS video evidence of all that went down after Jon got pulled over on March 24. And trust us, the footage is NOT convincing enough to make us fully believe Jon will be off the hook any time soon. I mean, he did go ham on a police officer — with his words that is. “You are an absolute f–king liar,” Jon yelled at the officer, who can be heard being equally aggressive with the UFC fighter during the traffic stop. “I can’t wait until you get out of my face. You’re despicable. Pig. You disgust me.” Whoa!
The main reason this was all such a big deal is because Jon was sentenced to 18 months probation last year after pleading guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of a hit-and-run. So this kind of behavior is definitely not good for someone who should be on their best behavior right now.
Until more information is revealed, Jon is still currently scheduled to face light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier in the headliner of UFC 197, which takes place April 23 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. But one thing is certainly clear, this is one fight that Jon definitely doesn’t want to miss, as defeating Daniel would crown him the current, NEW UFC Light Heavyweight Champion.
Are you shocked by Jon’s arrest, HollywoodLifers? Do YOU think he’ll be able to fight in UFC 197?
