This is so sad. A bomb has gone off at Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park in Lahore, Punjab, in Pakistan killing at least 55 people and wounding more than 100 on Easter Sunday. It’s not clear whether this was a terrorist attack, but the body of a suicide bomber was recovered from the scene.
The explosion was reported to have taken place near the children’s play area at the family park, which would’ve been bustling with families hoping to enjoy their day.
“A large number of people, majority of them women and children, were present in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park in Lahore when the suicide bomber blew himself up,” Lahore police officer Dr. Haider Ashraf is reported to have said, as per NBC News. “Mostly women and children are killed and injured in the blast.”
Dr. Ashraf added that it was likely that a number of “Christians” were attending the park and were targeted in the horror blast.
Police officials are said to have recovered a dead body of a suicide bomber, but as of yet no terrorist organizations have claimed the attack. The man in question “seems to be between 25 and 30 years old,” police superintendent Mustansar Feroz said.
Salman Rafique, the Punjab health minister added, “We are in a state of emergency. All the hospitals are under emergency. All ambulances had been called to the site of the blast, as a large number of people … are injured.” So terrible.
This latest incident comes hot on the heels of the Brussels airport attack at the Maalbeek metro station, in which at least 31 people were killed and 270 were injured. ISIS claimed responsibility for the deadly explosions that killed Americans Justin and Stephanie Shults and siblings Alexander and Sascha Pinczowski.
