It’s only rock ‘n’ roll, but I like it! The Rolling Stones made history, playing all their biggest hits for a free concert in Havana, Cuba on Mar. 26. 500,000 fans came to see the rockers perform, despite a request from the Pope asking them not to play on Good Friday!
Fans in Cuba, where the band has a huge following but has never been allowed to play, lined up for hours to see Mick Jagger and the rest of the boys showcase their greatest songs in a 2-hour set, including “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Gimme Shelter” and “Sympathy For The Devil.”
“Hello Havana! Good evening to my Cuban people,” the legendary frontman addressed the crowd as the Stones took to the stage. “We know that years ago it was difficult to listen to our music here in Cuba, but here we are, playing for you in your beautiful land. I think that finally things have changed, haven’t they?”
But the show was nearly derailed after the Rolling Stones received a letter from Pope Francis asking them to reschedule the concert because of the Easter holidays.
‘The band’s team were flabbergasted when the Vatican got in touch by letter – couldn’t believe their eyes,” a source told UK tabloid the Daily Mirror. “Much as they didn’t want to upset the Pope, they had a contract to play and were going to honor it. They have made a promise to the Cuban people and won’t let them down.”
And it seems like the Cuban people certainly didn’t mind one bit, they look like they had a great time and it was an awesome show!
