Who’s that stud in the Miami Hurricanes jersey? If you’re looking at No. 13, that’s Angel Rodriguez, the university basketball team’s star that has erupted during this year’s March Madness. Get to know more about Angel right here!
With a record of 27-7, there’s no denying that the Miami Hurricanes basketball squad is filled with tons of talented players. But there’s one who has stood out in the 2016 NCAA tournament: Angel Rodriguez. The 23-year-old Miami senior guard helped his team to the Sweet Sixteen with his swift moves and trick shots, and he hopes to continue the success as they face Villanova on March 24. Before the big game, we have five fast facts about Angel for you!
1. He hasn’t always played for Miami.
When he was a teenager, Angel made the brave move to Miami, leaving his family behind in order to pursue his dream of being a basketball player. But upon his search for college, he found interest in the coach at Kansas State University. He ended up playing at K-State for two years, before heading to University of Miami to be closer to his family. No matter where he’s playing, though, he’s proved to be a star!
2. He pays tribute to his dad while he’s playing.
Angel lost his father when he was only 2 years old, after his dad was tragically killed in the crime-ridden streets of Cupey, Puerto Rico. In his career-high game against Wichita State on March 19, he celebrated by looking up to the sky and blowing a kiss — an ode to his late dad.
3. He’s not ashamed to be the shortest one on his team.
By normal standards, Angel’s 5′ 11″ height isn’t too shabby for a guy. But by basketball standards, that leaves him as one of the shortest (if not the shortest) on the court. Despite feeling small initially, Angel has since used his height as motivation to really take down the competition…which is exactly what he does with his alley-oop passes and crazy shots!
4. Sorry ladies, he’s married!
As if 2016 wasn’t going well enough with Angel’s basketball career, he also walked down the aisle this year! He married his longtime love, Jesenia, on Jan. 26. We’re sure she’s having a great time watching her hubby kick butt in the NCAA tourney!
5. He’s so talented, A-Rod wants to hang out with him!
After New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez (no relation) came to support the Hurricanes at one of their games, Angel tweeted his sadness about not getting to introduce himself to Alex. But Angel has apparently made quite the impression on A-Rod, because Alex was quick to tweet back and say “Hopefully we can meet sometime. Let’s try to set it up.” Okay, clearly Angel is destined for some pretty amazing things!
