You know when there’s a horrible character you shouldn’t fall for but can’t help it? That’s exactly the case on Shonda’s new show, ‘The Catch.’ Hello, Peter Krause.
Shonda Rhimes‘ new addition to TGIT kicked off on March 24, and we have to say — it’s another show about freakin’ powerful, awesome women (featuring some super hot men). Mireille Enos plays the role of Alice Vaughn, a private investigator whose firm has been hunting a thief they’ve labeled, “Mr. X,” for a long time now — a thief that’s just happens to be her fiancée “Christopher Hall” (Peter Krause). Right away, when we meet the couple planning a wedding, we watch her give him a check for half their house so that they can be equal partners, after all. Oh yeah, and half the house cost $1.3 million — all of her life savings.
Right after that, Christopher is assigned by his boss, Margot, to break it off with her as it’s time to leave — and she lets him know she wanted him to get close to her for money, but never told him to propose. And by his boss, I mean the woman he’s actually dating. While he was good at pretending to be that good guy, he clearly wasn’t that good guy. After seeing Alice in her wedding dress later that night, they had quite the steamy bedtime, and he asked her to run away with him. She agreed to — once she catches Mr. X. Once at work, her coworkers convince her to go away with him — because, duh. But… she’s too late.
When she gets to their apartment, he’s gone, as is all his stuff. And at his office, it’s the same. She quickly realizes, he took everything. So, why would he con a PI? Well, to hack in to the system, get the clients’ funds, and to get close to certain ones who have million dollar projects. In true Shonda style, Alice isn’t at all the weeping ex — she’s ready to investigate and find him — and be a badass woman that we all know and love.
Alice and her partner were later approached from another agent who had been scammed by Christopher as well, so it was time to fight back; they pinpointed where he’d be heading next and what he’d set out to steal. With that, they set him up, had a thumb drive they had tracked and erased, delivered to him. Naturally, when Margot and Chris realize the conning was turned around, they were not happy.
It was also pretty clear that for Christopher, it wasn’t all about the con. He had fallen for her… but he also wanted to win. At the end of the episode, she entered her apartment to find a million dollar painting from the museum that she had told him she loved — it was now hanging on her wall. Game on, Christopher.
