In the build-up to this one, Middle Tennessee coach Kermit Davis has been speaking up his team’s chances of causing an upset. To say he’s quietly confident is an understatement, and he says his boys will be ready to do battle once the game begins.
“I think they do have a quiet confidence,” Davis said in a press conference Mar. 17. “We understand Michigan State‘s a team that can sure win the national championship. But I just think our guys have just prepped like we have all year long, and I think they’re looking forward to playing well tomorrow.”
And why shouldn’t he be confident, Middle Tennessee has beaten some big teams in the past to get their fans excited, including a win over Auburn last December, as well as victories over UCLA, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss in recent years. And with sophomore guard Giddy Potts, who averages a 15-points per game, they should pose enough of a threat when they’re on the offensive.
However, this Michigan State team is on a role. They won the Big Ten Tournament and currently are on a streak of 13 wins from their last 14 games as they enter their 19th straight NCAA Tournament.
They’re also likely to welcome back freshman Kenny Goins, who hasn’t played since injuring his knee on Feb. 14 since winning against Indiana, so the task for Middle Tennessee is a big one. It’s hard to look past Michigan State on this, but surprises do happen!
