The Seattle Police Department has often been accused of destroying the gun Kurt Cobain used to commit suicide to cover up an alleged murder. On March 18, the police silenced their critics by releasing the very first pictures of the weapon that ended the Nirvana singer’s life. Click to see.
Kurt Cobain’s fans continue to miss him, even though it’s been over twenty years since his death. With theories of murder and cover-up still surrounding the Nirvana frontman’s death, the police have finally revealed the fatal weapon that ended a voice of a generation.

Seattle Police Department’s Cold Case Detective Mike Ciesynski posed with the shotgun involved in Kurt’s 1994 suicide, according to Spin Magazine. The photos, taken in June 2015, show the officer holding the gun at different angles, along what apparently is Kurt’s license. The photos hopefully will put to rest the rumor that officials destroyed the weapon to cover up a possible murder, according to CBS News.
“The SPD deliberately lied and deliberately covered up the results of their investigation,” said Tom Grant, a private investigator. Tom was hired by Kurt’s wife, Courtney Love, 51, to find Kurt days before his death, and he stated his theory in the 2015 documentary, Soaked In Bleach (which you can see here.) “The case,” Tom said, “needs to be changed from suicide to undetermined.”
Detective Ciesynski actually reviewed Kurt’s case files on the 20th anniversary of Kurt’s death in 2014 and found no new information to suggest that Kurt didn’t kill himself. The officer determined that the initial investigation “reached the correct conclusion that the manner of death was (suicide.)”
Kurt’s body was found in his Seattle home on April 8, 1994, according to the Associated Press. The initial investigation discovered that Kurt had taken a massive amount of heroin before turning the 20-gauge shotgun on himself. How very sad. Though two decades have passed, Kurt’s influence is still felt – even with pop stars like Justin Bieber, 22. However, his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, 23, says she’s not fan of Nirvana!
Despite the SPD’s findings, there’s a conspiracy theory that Courtney orchestrated Kurt’s murder. When friend and Smashing Pumpkins founder, Billy Corgan, was asked if he thought Courtney did it, per Consequence of Sound, he rolled his eyes and said, “Are you legitimately asking me this question?” Maybe with the release of the gun photos, fans’ lingering questions will finally be answered.
