Get your green clothes ready and your game face on — St. Patrick’s Day is almost here! While you could find any solid Irish pub to party at in your hometown, there are some cities in the US where the celebrations are unparalleled. Click through for the six best places to be on St. Paddy’s!
March 17, aka St. Patrick’s Day, is approaching, and that means it’s time to get ready to party! Six cities in the United States do St. Patrick’s Day better than anywhere else outside of Ireland itself: Chicago, New York City, Savannah, Boston, Pittsburg and San Diego. Click through to find out why!
For the past 40 years, a group of dedicated plumbers take to the Chicago River to dye it green! The famed green river kicks off the beginning of a raucous, wonderful parade, and hundreds of parties to follow.
Boston, which boasts a 20% Irish population, is home to the first St. Paddy’s parade in the US. Boston also hosts an annual 5K run (for those not getting wasted), and of course, tons of parties throughout the city.
3. New York City
Starting at 11:00am and ending around 5:00pm, you can parade down Fifth Avenue — and then follow it up with pub crawls throughout the city. Try to visit McSorley’s Old Ale House in the East Village if it’s not too crowded! The oldest Irish pub in New York, McSorley’s opened its doors in the 1860s and hasn’t removed any of its decorations since 1910. Just be aware — they still only serve two kinds of beer, “light” and “dark.”
Savannah’s famed, massive fountain in Forsyth Park flows green water for the holiday, just like the Chicago River. Savannah has a limited open container law, so green beer and jello shots are free to take on the streets in places like Riverfront Plaza! Of course, there’s a parade to take in, too!
5. San Diego
Each year, SD hosts the shamROCK music festival, after parties and bar crawls. The fest, which costs $30, brings together amazing Irish rock bands, and a full night of partying in Downtown San Diego’s famed Gaslamp District. If you shell out for the VIP tickets, there are plenty of complimentary drinks to be had!
Pittsburg has one of the largest parades in the country, with an expected 20,000 attendees this St. Patrick’s Day. “Irish Fair in the Square,” in Market Square, turns from a family-friendly event to a place to party at night; can you say open containers allowed?
